In a unanimous decision by the World Geoparks Council of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, the Serra da Estrela saw its World Geopark classification renewed. The one thousand points out of a possible one thousand were voted on at a meeting in Morocco and, to date, the Serra da Estrela is the only World Geopark to have achieved such a score. Covering the municipalities of Belmonte, Gouveia, Guarda, Manteigas and many others, the Estrela Geopark covers an area of 2216 km2, known for its extensive natural territories and rich geological history.
