Eduardo Rangel

Founder of Rangel Group

He was born into a humble family in Valadares, in the district of Oporto, but the example of his grandfather’s life and his own willpower transformed the dispatcher’s assistant at Oporto Customs into the face of one of the country’s largest holdings: the Rangel Group. Eduardo Rangel studied Accounting and Management and tells us that believing in the project, working hard and being a great team motivator are some of the secrets to success. In 2006 the Group embarked on its internationalisation process and today it is also present in Africa and South America.

What motivates the entrepreneur Eduardo Rangel?
Being an entrepreneur for me has always meant the desire to build, to develop, to be the most modern and technological, with the spirit of customer service. That has always been the message I have given to my teams.

In 2006, the Group embarked on its internationalisation. What has been the response of international markets?
We began our international forays in 2006 in Spain and we came across an ambitious project that very much required our talent. We managed to enjoy great success with it. But the crisis in the motor industry forced us to slow down. The following year we went to Angola, where we built a group with the same values as the one in Portugal, where we also represent FedEX and contractual logistics, as well as customs services. Today we are market leaders, but, as everyone knows, the Angolan financial crisis has also made it difficult for us to transfer foreign currency to Portugal. Mozambique was next, and last year we took over FedEx, whicht had a local company. The business is developing at a slower pace than in Angola, but it is doing well. Mozambique was followed by Cape Verde, and it has been a real success. We also represent FedEx here, and above all, a lot of shipping and local distribution.

Rangel Invest, SA is dedicated to very diverse business areas. Which one is the most profitable?
The diversification of the group has been done within the same scope of global logistics, specialising the companies for the different businesses: Customs, Fairs and Exhibitions, contractual industrial and consumer logistics, a specialisation in medicine logistics, land transport distribution in Europe and domestic distribution, worldwide air and sea transport, international express transport. Profits are different in each company, both by size and business, but the group consolidates all its accounts, and publishes them.

The Rangel Group has become an example of business success. What would you say is the secret to success?
Any success is always based on believing that it is possible and working hard, being a great motivator of teams, choosing the best and creating a true group spirit that knows that customers come before anything else. Along with all this we cannot stop permanently thinking about innovating and compensating those who dedicate themselves most to these principles.

What do you wish for the future of the company?
Above all else I wish for much success, and for it to continue developing the same principles with which it was created.
