We urgently need to act!

José Manuel Fernandes

MEP, professor and Portuguese politician

José Manuel Fernandes

More than ever, the world needs a strong, cohesive and exemplary European Union. It must be a leader, guiding light and beacon, in the defence of democracy, the rule of law, environmental sustainability.
Global challenges – of which I would highlight climate change – will never be overcome with individual solutions. Unfortunately, nationalism, individualism and hatred are spreading. The «vision» is that of the immediate result, the very short term. The EU is not immune, as Brexit and the various attacks on the rule of law in the EU prove. Extremisms are being fed and are growing.
We cannot resign ourselves to it. We will not give up!
The EU must have a strong, competitive, environmentally friendly, productive economy, which promotes innovation and entrepreneurialism, with the aim of achieving prosperity and social welfare, so that no one is left behind. At the same time, the EU must set an example to strengthen its role as a global player, export values and support development, especially in Africa – where we must act with the «eyes» of Africa, supporting an ambitious investment plan. Africans deserve to work, to live in peace, to be happy in their land. In this way we will be able to control migration, which also requires joint, coordinated and proactive action.
The solution lies in sharing, commitment, reciprocity and solidarity. It should be noted that solidarity implies environmental and economic sustainability. We stand by future generations if we leave them with a planet where they can live with quality and if we do not burden them with debt.
The European Parliament and the European Commission have this «vision and ambition». The Council, the Member States are on the same «wavelength» when it comes to proclamations. When it is time to decide, proclamations are either postponed or denied. Proclamation isn’t what is urgent, action is!
