Clinical director of Clínica Macro

In 2017 he took over the management of Clínica Macro, the second clinic in which he has held this position, following an exemplary career as a dentist and professor. A highlight of this career was undoubtedly his time in the United States, where he not only obtained a postgraduate degree at the New York University College of Dentistry, but was also an assistant professor at this institution. He therefore represents a new generation in this field, boasting international experience, wide-ranging knowledge and the capacity for leadership. All of which is needed in an era in which dental clinics are serving more and more people concerned about their appearance.

What makes a good clinical director? Tell us also about your role at Clínica Macro.
My predecessor at Clínica Macro was Dr Hernâni Teixeira, who was a leading name in dental medicine for 30 years, and who created a successful clinic. My role as clinical director is to continue this fine legacy. But above all else, my commitment is provide assistance, for patients and colleagues, 24 hours a day, ensuring the implementation of ‘Gold Standard’ medical protocols.

What did you learn as a professor?
The most difficult thing as a professor is inspiring students. Passing on knowledge can only happen when you manage to inspire someone to do more and better, and not just what we teach. The passion I feel for dentistry helps me to inspire those around me. In fact, what I learned was how to communicate with and motivate my students. This principle is essential to succeeding in a clinic guided by teamwork.

What were the main benefits of your experience in the United States?
I took a huge knowledge-based leap forward in my career at the New York University College of Dentistry, in 2009. These were moments of total dedication to dentistry; I had the chance to learn with the authors of the books that are studied at university! In addition to conventional classes, I was able to treat patients under the supervision and guidance of world renowned dentists. With this type of school, you acquire principles of excellence that then become ingrained.
«You have the privilege of belonging to a ‘club’ that shares knowledge at the highest level: NYUCD»
Social networks have brought about a greater concern with appearance. Does this translate into more visits to dentists and concern for oral health?
With an increasingly competitive society and growing image exposure, people are more sensitive to smiles. Nowadays, in addition to health concerns, there is higher aesthetic sensitivity and we, as dentists, are prepared to help patients achieve these goals.

And is appearance also an asset for a professional in this area?
The main assets for any dentist are concern for the health and well-being of the patient, as well as ongoing training. On a secondary level, it is also important that the dentist, the clinic and its employees convey a polished image. In the end, you have the privilege of belonging to a ‘club’ that shares knowledge at the highest level: NYUCD.
