Domingos de Andrade

Executive Director of Jornal de Notícias

He manages, from the North, a daily newspaper for the entire country. Domingos de Andrade, an active voice in the defence of the values of freedom of the press and of democracy, sees the return to the origins of journalism as one of the ways to regain the readers’ trust. Today the Jornal de Notícias (JN), which has enjoyed growth for 130 years, inside and outside its printed lines, is an example of how the media can and should reinvent and consolidate itself every day, in earnest.

Domingos de Andrade
The Jornal de Notícias is in constant flux. How can you reinvent a medium nowadays?
Permanent attention to the reader and to the platforms is what guides the changes. But the renovation of formats, content or graphics only makes sense with absolute respect for the Jornal de Notícias template. And always under the motto of closeness: in video, where JN Directo has been an innovator, or in the creation of a history magazine with the JN brand and quality, but which can survive on its own on the newsstand, as well as in the renovation of Notícias Magazine. Indeed, at a time when the world’s press is in fact going through a major crisis, JN has travelled a peaceful path of consolidating its audience and of innovation in fulfilling its mission to inform.

How is the press fighting the challenges of today’s world?
The press has shown great difficulties in finding new ways, but above all else in showing that it is relevant, unique and reliable in the scrutiny of the various powers. This veering off course has caused many newspapers, radio stations, television channels, credible online brands, to lose focus. And this focus lies in a return to the foundations of journalism. Good reporting, good interviews, news that scrupulously comply with deontological rules, but are relevant, and that make readers understand the important role of the press and of journalists. An independent press that pursues stories of interest will always make a difference for the reader. Without allowing itself to be overwhelmed by immediacy, which isn’t always easy. In fact, the crisis of the press and journalism is also the crisis of democracy, of a model of social organisation, with all its weaknesses, but for which there has been no better replacement invented so far. I don’t mean to demonise social networks with this. What I want to say is that it is precisely in these difficult times that the role of journalism should be more relevant, however many attacks it might be subjected to, which it is. A free press is of no interest to underground powers. It never has been.
«A free press is of no interest to underground powers. It never has been»
Has knowing JN so well been instrumental in bringing success to the new projects?
JN is the only media organisation that thinks of the country as its territories. It is not subservient to the capital; it exercises a journalism of proximity to the populations, their worries, needs, anguishes, but also dreams and causes, and not messenger journalism or of the political megaphone. More than knowing it, it is fundamental to understand the mission of the Jornal de Notícias, of its history in the defence of the most fragile socially, of its present, and of its role in Portuguese society. To know this path, to fight for this path, to count on editorial staff that knows its mission, that knows its readers, that fights for them, is the biggest reason why the JN has the success is has.

What would you still like to do in Journalism?
In journalism this question is asked every day and answered every day. Do the stories, give the news, that actually have an impact on people’s lives. Every day. It may seem utopian, even childish, but it is also being able to and wanting to be part of building a better world.
