A multicultural and modern country. Small in size but big in geographical diversity. Luxembourg boasts a millennial history, which is why it has four entries on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Covering an area of 2586 km2, the Grand Duchy has many secrets to reveal and corners to get lost in.
To explore the city, it’s best to choose walking. Let’s start with the historic centre, marked by a twin topography (upper old town and lower old town), where you can stroll along the impressive city wall and underground galleries, before visiting the palace.
The European Quarter contrasts with the most recent buildings, including the remarkable Philharmonie and the Mudam Museum of Contemporary Art, designed by IM Pei.
Due to its geological peculiarities, the country features very diverse landscapes within a very small area. There are forest covered ravines in the Luxembourg Ardennes; strange rock formations in the Mullerthal region, also known as Little Switzerland of Luxembourg; idyllic vineyards in Moselle; enchanting meadow landscapes to the west in Guttland; and old iron mining sites in the south, known as the Red Earth Country or Minett.

It ranks first in the list of the 221 safest cities in the world

The renovated fortresses and castles gleam with an ancient aura. For the beauty of the heritage they hold between their walls and also for the magnificent landscapes that surround them. To the north, the fortress of Vianden is one of the most popular and notable ones.
The Grand Duchy also has one of the densest networks of certified hiking trails in Europe. These paths cross breath-taking landscapes, valleys, forests, fields and meadows, and run alongside waterfalls and rivers.
Luxembourg is one of the smallest countries in Europe, with a population of just over 625,000 inhabitants, 48% of which are of other nationalities. As a parliamentary monarchy, this independent state is headed by a Grand Duke. The only Grand Duchy in the world, bordering Belgium, Germany and France. And by the way, the Schengen agreement (which eliminates border controls on people) takes its name from a small wine-growing village located in Moselle, where it was signed in 1985.

Since 2020, public transport is free throughout the territory

Luxembourg City (the capital) has a long history dating back to 963 and ranks first in the list of the 221 safest cities in the world (according to the 2019 Mercer ranking). As one of the founding members of the European Union, and one of the three decision-making places of the EU, the country with three officially spoken languages (Luxembourgish, French and German) has several institutions based there.
Luxairport is just a ten minute drive from the centre. And, since 2020, public transport is free throughout the territory. The Grand Duchy is also the country with the most Michelin star restaurants per capita in the world.
